Grapes: our vineyard produces about 8 tons of grapes per hectare. Red wine accounts for 80% of production. The winery is located on the San Lorenzo farm about 8 km from Voltrona. Our San Lorenzo wines, valid alternatives to our traditional production at Voltrona, are produced on these vineyards.
Olives: an olive tree takes 10 years to start producing olives and the plant becomes adult when it is about 25 years old. This is one of the reasons why olive oil is so expensive. We have 4 types of plants: frantoio 80%, leccino 5%, muraiolo 5%, correggiolo 10%. The olives are picked during November.
Cereal and fodder cover most of the land. The fields are cultivated with different types of cereals and fodder using the crop rotation method. One year hard wheat, the year after barley, then sunflowers or maize, etc.. The meadowland is renewed every three years. Some fields are laid fallow for a year.
In 1989, Fattoria Voltrona converted its production from conventional to organically-grown. It took 8 years to make the change. In order not to risk starving the land, we gradually changed production systems until the fields and trees were completely “detoxified”. We are certified by ICEA: Institute for Ethical and Environmental Certification.
