The excursions can be combined due to your wishes and we are happy to discuss alternatives for you in order to provide varying tours. We have other tours to offer than this ones which are described. We carefully put the groups together so the ride experience are on the same level. The time which is indicated in the tours shows the time from that we leave Voltrona until we come back to the farm.
VOLTRONA This is the shortest excursion and it lasts about 1 hour. We go through vineyards and olive groves in the hilly surroundings of Voltrona with views of the towers of San Gimignano. This excursion suits the beginner as well as those with some prior experience. Can be booked from March to November. Cost: € 25,00 per person.
PANORAMA SAN GIMIGNANO This excursion lasts about 2 hours. We go through vineyards both up-hill and down-hill, always with the view of the towers of San Gimignano behind us. Mixed riding on gravelled roads, across meadows as well as through forests. We go along a ridge with an amazing view of the Tuscan countryside before it is time to head back for the farm. This excursion suits those with some prior experience. Can be booked from March to November. Cost: € 35,00 per person.
CASTELVECCHIO The only way to get to this historic place is by foot or by horse, an excursion that lasts 3 hours and contains climbing both up and down the ravine until we finally reach the ruins of Castelvecchio. Short guided tour of the old village dating back to the13th century. This excursion goes through a rather hilly terrain, both on gravelled roads and through forests and is perfect for those interested in combining a sense of history and being out in the Tuscan countryside. This excursion suits those with some prior experience. Can be booked from March to November. Cost including coffee break: € 55,00 per person.
LIBBIANO A 4½ hour long excursion through the nature reserve in the forests of San Gimignano. If we are lucky we may get a glimpse of wild boar (cinghiale), a rather common sight in the Tuscan forest. This excursion goes through a varied terrain both in forests and open landscape, on paths and gravelled roads. We pass old abandoned farms situated far away from civilization and traffic noise. Long distances where we do “tölt” and climbing. A lovely excursion especially in the autumn when all the colours of the trees are intense! This excursion suits those with some prior experience. Can be booked from March to November. Cost including coffee break: € 65,00 per person.
BORGATELLO This excursion is the next longest and is recommended only to those with prior experience since it lasts for about 7 hours. We start by going through vineyards in a hilly landscape and up the long avenue of cypresses which takes us further along the Tuscan countryside. We ride through forests as well as through the open landscape on gravelled roads where we will also have the opportunity to do some “tölt”. As we get to the small village of Borgatello, we have reached our goal. We get off outside the restaurant “Il Calandrino”, where we are being served a typical Tuscan lunch. After having finished with the characteristic “espresso” we get back to our horses and head back home. Since the Italian summer is very hot this excursion can be booked during spring, until middle of June and autumn, from middle of September. Minimum of 4 persons. Cost including lunch at “Il Calandrino”: € 95,00 per person.
PIGNANO This excursion is our longest tour and is recommended only to those with prior experience since it lasts for about 9 hours. We leave in the early morning for a day in the saddle from morning to evening. On this whole day trip we go to the medieval village Pignano. Pignano is a very unique a 12th century village. After costly restoration, today it’s managed by a cooperative, which, besides producing their own electricity, also have organic cultivation. This excursion offers a different landscape, we will reach higher altitudes and have unforgetable views, even seeing the coast (clear days) and over the “the Tuscan geyser area” Larderello. We ride through forests and up on to ridges and we do “tölt” along the longer stretches. At Pignano, the horses get to rest while we are served an organic lunch including local wine. In the early afternoon, we start our return to Voltrona leaving the Volterra area behind us. We make a short stop at the ruins of Castelvecchio if requested; a fortified town that was abandoned in the 14th century and now totally covered by vegetation. The only way to get to this historic-archaeological site is on foot or horseback. Since the Italian summer is very hot this excursion can be booked during spring, until middle of June and autumn, from middle of September. Minimum of 4 persons. Cost including lunch at Pignano: € 120,00 per person.
Groups of 6-8 people may book exclusive horseback excursions. For groups of less than that, other people may join the various excursions.
